6 Sydney Chinese New Year Events That You Must See

From the 27th of January to the 12th of February 2017, the Chinese community in Sydney will be celebrating this year’s Chinese New Year. The 2-week celebration is not only for Chinese people though, as tourists flock all over the city to celebrate and join the festivities.

It’s the year of the Rooster, and everybody is stoked about the new year. Are you interested in knowing what’s in store for you this year? Or perhaps you just want to see and experience the Chinese New Year events and see how amazing their culture is? Whatever it is, the celebration in Sydney is one that you should not miss. One thing that you should definitely keep in mind is that the streets will be pretty hectic during these weeks. It’s difficult to get a cab, let alone commute. No need to worry though, as you can always opt for a car hire in Sydney. Now, let’s get to which events you should attend during this year’s Chinese New Year festivities in the city.

  1. Westpac Lunar Lantern Hub

Dance to the different tunes of renowned DJs including Beth Yen, Sasha Moon, CMAN, and Tikki Tembo. If you love gelatos, then you should try Gelato Messina’s gelato cookie sandwiches – as these are specially made for the Lunar New Year. You can also order cocktails from the pop-up bar or enjoy Bao Stop’s delicious Peking Duck fries while sitting under the glowing red lanterns. The event will be held on the 3rd and 4th of February.

  1. Bilingual Storytime at Green Square

This event is perfect if your kids tagged along with you on the trip. You can bring them to the Green Square Library on the 6th of February for a few minutes of storytelling, singing, and dancing for preschoolers and toddlers. It’s totally free, and is a great event since your kid/s will be exposed to different languages and dialects.

  1. The Shaanxi Cultural Market

From the 6th to the 10th of February 2017, you can experience a taste of traditional Shaanxi culture by attending the Shaanxi Cultural Market in this mini outdoor market in World Square. The fun and energetic performances will get you on your feet. If you are more on the artsy side, then you will surely enjoy the calligraphy, tea ceremonies, paintings, colourful handcraft, and shadow puppetry during their scheduled time slots.

  1. The Sydney Morning Herald Lunar Markets

Do you love eating and consider yourself a “foodie”? Then go on and head to the outdoor evening markets and feast on the diverse Asian cuisines. Cap your night by listening to good live music with your friends and/or family. The lunar markets will be at the Pyrmont Bay Park from the 27th of January until the 5th of February 2017.

Explore the ancient and secret language of Nu Shu by attending The Secret Songs of Women on the 11th of February. Listen to a symphonic alchemy of the orchestra, or watch the 13 microfilms that will be projected above the stage.

If you consider yourself a science geek, then head on to the Sydney Observatory on the 9th of February. The experts will discuss the science and mythology of the moon while examining its central role in the Lunar New Year. You can even enjoy an aperitif under the lovely stars and sky while learning more about the amazing universe.
