Road trips are a lot of fun. They are a great way to see the world and for you to rediscover yourself, among other things. And while you pack your bags and plan your itinerary, make sure that you know what you are doing and are prepared for what is in store for you.
Everybody makes mistakes. You are no exception. It isn’t bad per se, but some mistakes are a lot worse than others. You can end up hurting yourself and end up not enjoying your planned trip. So, it is always important to sit and think about how you will go about your journey.
Here are a few mistakes to avoid if you are thinking about backpacking in a different part of the world.
Drinking tap water
In some parts of the world, people tend to drink their water directly from the faucet. But other parts don’t keep their water as clean as they should, and it is highly advised that guests and locals alike avoid drinking water from the tap.
If you are backpacking in parts of Asia, Latin America or even Africa, it is highly advisable that you bring your water bottle to avoid any complications and bacteria.
Letting their guard down
If you grew up in a good part of your city where people will not be harmed even if they walked at night, don’t have the same assumption about the rest of the world. Some backpackers tend to forget this and let their guard down. What happens is that they walk around unfamiliar places usually alone at night, thinking it would be a great way to see the city they are staying in.
But alas, there is almost always someone out to get them. So, the best piece of advice here is that it is best to stay in your hotel room at night and avoid the shady parts of town altogether.
Pack too much
Getting excited to go on your trip is normal. However, this excitement can grow out of hand, and you may end up packing more clothing than what you intended.
That can prove a problem, especially if you will be taking a flight, as you may have to pay any extra weight charges.
Remember that you are a backpacker. That means you will only need to carry what you can on your back. And it is also important to remember that you will be doing a lot of walking. So, keep that in mind as you pack your things for the big trip.
Going to unsafe hostels
Another aspect of backpacking is travelling on a tight budget. That means you have to make do with what you can afford. And although there are a lot of budget-friendly hostels, there are some which can be deemed unsafe. There is always a chance of having your things stolen from you, especially at budget-friendly hostels.
Before you book a room, it is essential to do your research to ensure your overall safety. What’s more, you should make sure that you travel with some padlocks handy. One to keep your backpack safe as you go through the city, and another one that can lock up any locker or closet you might use while staying at hotels or inns to protect your stuff.
