Everything You Need to Know About the 2017 Melbourne Cup

For decades, the entire city of Melbourne comes to a screeching halt on the first Tuesday of November because of the most prominent event on the racing calendar, the Melbourne Cup. This year won’t be any different.

Known as ‘the race that stops the nation’, the 2017 Emirates Melbourne Cup happens on the 7th of November at the Flemington Racecourse and will begin at 3pm EST, with nearly a hundred thousand people expected to attend and watch the thrilling races.

While you have many ways to watch the event, nothing compares to experiencing all the excitement and pageantry in person. So, call your mates, plan early, and book a car at Alpha Car Hire before it’s too late.

A purse of $6.2 million is up for grabs at this year’s Melbourne Cup and many horse racing experts place Almandin at the top of their list as a favourite to win this year’s races.

A total of ten races will happen on the day, with the first race starting at 10 in the morning, and the last one at 5 in the afternoon. Each race will have a 40-minute break, so you’ll have time to eat or freshen up.

Now, for the uninitiated, you may be wondering, ‘Why is the Melbourne Cup such a huge deal?’ Well, I could give you a long list of compelling reasons. But for the sake of saving time, here’s a quick rundown.

Betting

Aussies are among the biggest punters in the world and betting just adds to the excitement. A punter can spend an average of $8.50 on the Melbourne Cup odds. Also, an increase of about 20 to 50 percent on online betting is seen on the day of the event.

Fashion
Dressing up is a huge deal and a great excuse to wear a new suit, a bright spring outfit or a fancy hat at the Melbourne Cup. It is without question the crème de la crème of all fashion events this racing season.

In 2016, Victorians were more than happy to spend roughly $44 million in suits, dresses, shoes, and hats. That figure is expected to reach $50 million this year, according to the Australian Retailers’ Association.

It’s an international attraction.
Australia is well-known for its gorgeous beaches, famous tourist spots, vibrant cities, among other things. But the Melbourne Cup has become an international draw with racers competing from all over the world. You’ll find past winners hailing from countries like France, Japan, Germany, and Ireland, while some British-trained horses have come close to winning.
